“Square One” is the first single album released by South Korean girl singer group BLACKPINK on August 8, 2016. The album contains two songs, WHISTLE and BOOMBAYAH.

SQUARE ONE
“SQUARE ONE” was carefully produced by YG’s top producer TEDDY for over two years. He participated in the lyrics and composition of all the songs. BLACKPINK also made its official debut with this album. Unlike the previous girl group, this album makes this group eye-catching, showing their unique music and charm.
Soon after the two songs were released, they occupied the 1-2 position on the Billboard Global Digital Music Chart in the United States. They were also the first new girl group in Korea to achieve such outstanding results as soon as they debuted, which aroused strong attention.
A brief introduction to the singer
BLACKPINK is a Korean girl singing group launched by YG Entertainment on August 8, 2016. It consists of four members: JISOO, JENNIE, ROSÉ, and LISA. “BLACKPINK” refers to the beautiful-looking pink with a slight negative meaning. The company wants to convey the meaning of “don’t just look at the beautiful parts” and “what people see does not mean everything.”
It is a new girl group launched by YG Entertainment after 2NE1 after 7 years. All members in the group have 4-6 years of trainee experience. On August 8, 2016, they released their first single album “SQUARE ONE” and made their official debut. The album won first place on the iTunes album charts in 14 countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia. The song “WHISTLE” took first place on the weekly charts of eight music websites. They are the first girl group to set that record with their debut song. They also received a lot of attention because of this album.
Analysis of this album
WHISTLE
“WHISTLE” wants to express the hidden love between men and women. It is a hip-hop song full of fantasy and a sexy atmosphere.
The “hey boy” at the beginning of the song is very attractive. The first half uses 808 jazz drums and bass, and the sound of the whistle is always paved in the background. The rap part is not an advantage for the girl group, but they use it very well and sing a unique style. Before the transition to the chorus, the original guitar chord appears, which contrasts with the previous style but can be integrated into it. The clapping hands sounds also appear in the background, and they gradually bring people into the chorus part.
After the chorus ends, various noises appear in the background sound, and an octave (the difference between the first and last notes in a series of eight notes on a scale) suddenly drops in the melody. These all highlight the dream of the song. The whole song is mainly in the major key, but it gives a feeling of playing a minor key. Electronic dance music and drum bass style are the mainstay of this song.
BOOMBAYAH
“BOOMBAYAH” is a fast song with a strong rhythm that brings coolness to the hot summer.
The accent of the song is placed on beat 3 instead of beat 1. The progress of this song is not in keeping with tradition. There is a noticeable pause before the chorus arrives, which makes people feel a little strange. But we are still able to suddenly enter the excitement in the next second. The minor melody of the song makes people feel like Egyptian or Indian style. That’s because there are two octave scales used in the song, one is the whole tone before the semitone, and the other is the opposite. In the rap part, even people who don’t understand Korean will want to continue listening very much. They use the rap part very perfectly.
In the whole song, the members fully demonstrate their self-confidence and charm, combining with the lyrics to give people a feeling of “forget everything and just want to dance”.
